In the wake of Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chris Henry's death from injuries suffered in a fall from a pickup truck in Charlotte, N.C., it remains unclear what caused the fall.
A witness told the Cincinnati Enquirer that Henry, who was involved in a domestic dispute with his fiancee, Loleini Tonga, who was driving the truck, threatened to kill himself if she didn't stop the truck to speak with him.
"He was banging on the top, on the doors, screaming at the lady, 'We need to talk,'" neighbor Lee Hardy said. "He said, 'If you take off, I'm going to jump off the truck and kill myself.'"
According to Hardy, Tonga stopped briefly before accelerating out of the driveway.
Shortly after that point, two 911 calls ensued:
"I'm driving behind a yellow F-150, there's a black man on it with no shirt, he's got his arm in a cast," a woman said in the first 911 call. "He's beating on the truck … I don't know if he's trying to break in it or something crazy."
That was followed by another call.
"I need an ambulance now," a man said in the second 911 call. "There's a man laying in the road … he looks dead, there's no movement."
Per the report, Tonga stopped the car immediately after Henry fell off to assist him.
"She pulled the vehicle over to get out and help," Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer Rosalyn Harrington told the Enquirer.
There haven't been any charges filled in connection with the episode at this point.
Henry died at 6:36 a.m. Thursday at Carolinas Medical Center and is survived by three children, including two with Tonga.
According to a TMZ.com report, the couple had met with a wedding planning company on Tuesday with a wedding ceremony planned for March 15.
Per the report, Henry was "annoyed" and "aggravated" about the cost of the wedding, including a photography package, and that the couple argued before Henry stormed out while leaving Tonga to take care of the details.
